There's no right equation. We're talking about taking global influencers from F1 drivers to surfers, to everybody else. Peter Feigin: Yeah. And our expectations are to consistently improve and grow as a business and consistently improve on the court and vie for a championship. Michael Red: Wow. Giannis was like, Ill make this simple, its got to be bigger than that Lakers ring it might be, and its got to be cool. We wanted like a really cool clean design. I think thats like fair. Everybody knows you are going to work your butt off if you work here. Twin brothers Peter and David Paul are best known for their role in The Barbarians (1987). I said, "Man, make sure you represent." Peter Feigin: That's an interesting statement. We are going to put in the notes Peters email address because he was kind enough to give us that. John: Talking about teaching, we have 15 years of this podcast, so we have thousands of young people around the world that actually tune in and listen and when we have someone like you on, Id like to ask you this. God, I love it as a case study. And what sort of plan could we have when there was some sort of light at the end of the tunnel to kind of ramp back up in a big way. My fantasy, I had two fantasies growing up. But the honesty of saying you dont know all the answers and figuring out what the solutions are is probably like pretty powerful in the way things work. What people never tell you about the rings, its not just the 20 rings for the players and the coach and the owners. And with that, Feigin became the business brains behind a team about to set NBA standards in architecture, basketball operations and technology -- only he didn't know it. "We had to build a new arena or we were going to move the team. We were literally refining, cared about all the cookies and stories in it and stuff. His friends, while the games are suspended, are trying to stay as prepared as possible. High draft picks such as Andrew Bogut, Yi Jianlian, Joe Alexander and Brandon Jennings hadn't panned out. We have the DNA and the strength and this caliber of championship caliber team to really be attractive to the world. We've gotten through conversations. Peter Feigin: I'm not a good example of life balance, because I kind of blend them in such a big way that my kids, my brothers, my mother, my wife, they're all a part of it. "Now we have to monitor and figure out and organize the groups that travel from Greece to away games and organize the meet-and-greets after the game, which by the way, aren't scheduled. The world is incredible. Peter: did active, to get in. I'm like, "I don't know. In a perfect world, how do we mesh them together to have one and one equal three? We had to certainly do it on the resources, our facilities, we had to do it on the human capital, and then we had to change our whole perception which came from the owners on what we wanted to do on the court, which win an NBA championship and what we wanted to do off the court is be the innovators and be the leaders in the way we really operate. So, he's at the All-Star game and I literally said, "It's too bad we're not on Zoom," because I'm holding these. I dont know if thats a word, but I would attach myself. And I think of it, Michael, to answer the second part, it's like we thought we were woke. We built an infrastructure, to our owners' credit on, they made it really simple. Everybody at ball was just, you got to move, go leave now. Peter Feigin, the president of the Milwaukee Bucks, playing defense. I always joke that we could run a country, dAmboise said. Talk about that. Does he play defense?. This was just the very beginning, the first thought was, "Oh, boy. Where does your ring sit? John: By the way, weve got with us today, Peter Feigin, hes the president of the Milwaukee Bucks. And if nothing else, like we kind of, I always answer everything pretty simply. Youre the ultimate insider. When Khris was a rookie, I said, "Do you know whose jersey you wearing?" You buy the Bucks, you help with that whole negotiation and you were living in New York, so you were married already and you decided. His is a story of grit, will, and great humor. You got to think about what the objective is, but I truly do believe, just no is not an answer if you surround yourself with smart people. And we'll get into the twin in a little bit. It found him. We're talking about localizing all of our social, so in every language you can imagine to absorb it from us, so we can tell the story. Peter, before I let you go, I have to ask you. Feigin's first task was evident right away. Michael Red: I just, I got to start the podcast off with, before we get into our history, someone just texted me and wanted me to ask you this question. There is an honor system. And I think it was like a checkpoint for us certainly, but for the whole country on like, "Boy, this is one of those inflection points that we've got to make matter in a big way." In September 2013, then-deputy commissioner Adam Silver announced that Bradley Center, the team's home since 1988, was unfit for an NBA team. Weve got Peter Feigin. He simplified the commodities business like, oh, I understand it now. And he said, "Yes, sir. He captained. Okay. Everybody knows everybody. By the way I never wouldve said this seven years ago, I think you have to be involved. Well, you got to be beyond on top of your game. Antetokounmpo signed a four-year, $100 million extension in September 2016 (right before his first All-Star season) that will keep him under contract in Milwaukee through 2020-21. John: Like you said, the smartest people could take the most complex issues and just make them simple. Really surprised the 15 largest companies aren't following our lead and kind of like, "Where are they?" And I knew who Arthur Ashe was, but I wasn't a big tennis guy and my job was basically being Arthur Ashe's right hand person through. Peter: Im fairly, my mom was immersed in data analytics before data and analytics was business intelligence. Do you want to be in a place where people are having fun and were trying to get rid of all the toxic. We are one big family. It was July. The good news is it's pretty small shop. Michael Red: The facilities, everything that you guys have done so far is remarkable. And we're going to be the No. And you do it, for us, kind of my job was to be that rock and support and think about if you told me that 50% of my time would be spent on making sure everybody is okay. -- Follow Jeff Eisenband on Twitter @JeffEisenband. And I think what happened in this year, in so many ways, was a great splash of ice water thinking like, "Boy, we got a long way to go." How do we make this more than equal?" But I think, if you sprinkle in the effort and the care, it affects change. The first kind of fully owned African American sports agency, whose main client was Arthur Ashe. The Giannis Effect has been a product of the digital age. Peter: which I cant even believe it, Id probably have some fun teaching. Whether youre building an arena, whether youre building infrastructure or a team, whether youre dealing with the same problems, it is really powerful to end up with, when you come up with conflict and problems or you need solutions, or you need smart brains to be able to pick up the phone with 5, 10 like-minded people who are dealing with the same stuff. I think engagement and investment in the community and social responsibility is like a big deal. When Lee was shooting his film The Best Man, he brought the actors Taye Diggs and Morris Chestnut to the gym. Off the court it is best practice. It so happens Bucks co-owners Marc Lasry and Wes Edens sent their children to Trevor Day. John: This edition of the impact podcast is brought to you by Engage. And you've done this a number of times throughout your career and your life. And I love your brother. Talk about the steps leading up to pulling off, living the dream, actually winning the championship. Peter: NIL has no guardrails, no anything whos getting paid what? This is why you go to Parents' Night, folks. So I'm never a great example of where the balance is and what the cut off is in everything because it's all one big puzzle to me. A, if you werent doing this and I know this is a dream job. Peter: Yeah, I think number one is to explain kind of a small market. And how do we capture that, both digitally and on broadcast? Can you keep a competitive championship-caliber team across an era? Ive got two kids Im working as, Id say a consultant, helping to put together a business plan. John Shegerian: This edition of the Impact podcast is brought to you by ERI. Maybe I'm biased, but knowing you and seeing what you've done with the Bucks. But then theres, in this group weve got 300 full-time people and 250 of them are involved in volunteering. John: Whos raising their hand saying Dad, were all in with you. How does this work? I wanted to eat some. And then I think the most incredible thing, which I can't see happening in a major metropolitan area again, is we were able to acquire 30 acres of contiguous land. I don't care where you take them from, then we're on a good path." Talk about that, Peter. "That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God.. Peter holds a bachelor's degree from Franklin and Marshall College and completed the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business' Financial Executive Program. How could we not be good at quick serve restaurants? John: How about the issue of when people put on those special glasses now, and they can watch a game in 3D or whatIm so out of it a little bit, Peter, technologically speaking, but the young people are talking about the future of watching sports is were going to be able to, is going to be eventually cameras court side, and were going to be able to watch it and feel like were sitting court side and youre at a bucks game. John: Right. Youre going to have a lot of fun. For Feigin, Lasry, Edens, Dinan, head coach Jason Kidd and the entire organization, Antetokounmpo, born and raised in Greece to Nigerian immigrants, is a business unicorn. In the face of unprecedented circumstances . Like its going to streaming, its going to over the top, that is a huge change from all these local teams depending and getting guaranteed large dollar values for regional sports deals. How do we keep driving? So, it's a little bit kind of nuts and delusional to go through thinking like you can kind of accomplish or solve or get anything done, but it's kind of the way I've kind of attacked life in a big way. "Of course, you have Greece, but Asia is mesmerized by Giannis. Its rotating cast includes bankers, lawyers and high-powered television executives. So I've been ticketing him with $5,000 tickets, $50,000 tickets with little notes. Thats the biggest change is the regional sports networks have changed dramatically. Peter Feigin, President of the NBAs Milwaukee Bucks and formerly Vice President of Marketing for the New York Knicks and Director of Marketing at Six Flags, joins me on the podcast today. When he called Milwaukee "the most segregated, racist place I've ever experience in my life" in 2016, Feigin was just being a straight shooter intent on improving the neighborhood. Absolutely. Giannis Antetokounmpo is the gift that keeps on giving for Bucks' management. Feigin got the funding approved in the next couple months, and the Bucks signed a 30-year lease to stay in Milwaukee. Crazy story of how things happened. We need to resource this place, like you cant imagine and we need to build an infrastructure that is beyond sound for growth, so not just day one. Michael Red: The family, I know, that's big for you in that culture and what you try to create as a culture is family. Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin received the Crystal Living Legend award from founders of the Black Inventors Gallery at a meet-and-greet with business leaders Wednesday. But the Bucks' toughest hit came off the court. In a Q&A with The Undefeated, Milwaukee Bucks president Peter Feigin talked about resuming the season, the business lost due to COVID-19, and much more. And kudos to you guys for being cognizant of that. How do we work together? John: In terms of watching the young generation now come up, has NIL and the advent of NIL do you believe thats going to have a positive or negative effect as you continue to recruit players in the future? We always tell people, listen, if you want to work here, youre going to have to collaborate with people. It just kind of really trying. It's there is no time balance, so it's kind of surreal. We pivoted and our kids were able to finish high school in New York and we made it work and now weve been Wisconsin residents from New York City, which is a whole other interesting transition. Thank you. John: Hey, Peter. But no matter how skilled the player, new members are included on a probationary basis. "We are literally just scraping the surface of what can come from this," he says. I've got two brothers, my mom, my other family member. John: Now, you married, what, wife is a native New Yorker? Peter Feigin: Well, I think, like you talked about the opportunity for a great historic organization like this to embrace a former Olympian, it's all-star, like a person who's current in the game and really is an asset. Their experience is basketball. My wife and I have known each other since high school. You cant imagine. Michael Red: And this was a decade long process, Peter? Defenders are responsible for calling fouls. Peters son, Thomas, and Dans son, Jackson, are both high school juniors and excellent players. So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". And we thought we were in a place and we're nowhere close to how good we can be or how we can use this NBA platform and our players and our organization to help change the community, to help change our performance as a team, and to be better citizens. Feigin is in charge of divvying up the five-man teams at the start of the session and typically includes himself on the strongest squad. But I'm sure [inaudible 00:30:10] the players in that process. Some guys I went to high school with some guys who played college, and I leaked it at the opportunity at that game on a Saturday morning and everybody went absolutely nuts because for better or worse, Im kind of being your average guy, you do not think Peter Fiegins going to have the opportunity to become an NBA president to do it and these jobs are so rare and so incredible. Talk about having arguably the greatest player in the world on your team. Now, Ive been extremely lucky. And it was kind of an incredible moment. They all had the space, they're at Disney, they have all the amenities. How do we build the baselines? Just try to be quiet. And that's before you're worried about what a health scare is. They cause matchup problems for their fathers friends. Peter Feigin: No. How does it really work? Malcolm D. Lee, the director of the Space Jam sequel starring LeBron James, and Christopher dAmboise, a former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, are two of the games founding fathers. It would be great if you represented me and kind of went down there and looked at the business for a second." Is this coming? And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. Im not a big fan of, hey, we need to make money or consult off that. Before we started this interview, you took a little break and said, John excuse me for a second because someone very special stopped by. Talk a little bit about the ice cream truck, the ice cream man. I have an identical twin brother who happens to still be in New York and runs a private school called Trevor Day School. John: I dont want to skip over that. Youre going to have to work your butt off because its work. Talk a bit about how to do that without bruising anyones ego and keeping everybody happy. I'm just honored and grateful that you took the time to be on the cast today, man. Peter: The ice cream truck. But in a short period of time, the prospect and the opportunity of just not running a team, but kind of building a city and the real estate and the expansion and kind of where Milwaukee was as a city and kind of an inflection point was just kind of one of these miracle situations. Well, you know about the ice cream truck. We screw around a hell of a lot, but let me tell you, if one of our guys was in trouble, if we need to circle the wagons, if they need advice on evaluating something they're doing, they know that it's extremely objective, it's immediate, and that's what we do here. He's also been quoted as saying he wants to play for the Bucks "forever" and he does not know if he could be "the same player" in a "flashy city." Michael Red: One thing that impresses me about our organization is how diverse it is. Peter: We knew each other. I talk about it all the time with my wife, with my brother, with everything. What has it meant to you to bet on yourself? John: Hundreds. I think its hard to grasp where this is going, but it professionalizes players at this, Peter: point teenagers at a much earlier level than theyve ever been. Right? "You will be in a business meeting on Monday with one of the 300-500 business executives in the town and you will see them some place later that week or the week after, unlike in New York City," he says. This is learning on the job, right? We stopped operating. Whats going on with technology whats going on, even with your experience in the arena. My wifes born in El Salvador came here when she was 9 to Brooklyn. But there are also long-range shooters who work in retail sales and small forwards who direct nonprofits, photographers and writers, students and teachers. I love our chances this year, sincerely. Peter: Yeah. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. After college, Dan Feigin got a job at Trevor teaching English and coaching sports, which meant one important thing: He had access to a gymnasium in New York City, where indoor hoops are more precious than parking spaces. Now you win, you have the championship. When I was looking at the website, I was like, man, I cant wait to taste that chicken. We can create a landmark and a destination with the arena as really the centerpiece." And probably about 15 years ago, Mark Lazari was looking to explore buying teams and they were in a parent conference, and my brother just said to him, Hey, my twin brothers over at Madison Square Garden he runs the marketing there he understands the P&L you probably get a kick out of him coming with you and giving you an opinion on what that was. Make a long story short, we probably spent the next 10 years having the most incredible adventures of going to do due diligence on teams that he was prospecting to buy. This is the Impact Podcast. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. Peter Feigin: Yeah. You talked about the head of human capital, and obviously Im proud to say, and Im only saying this with love, youre a native New Yorker like I am and were people, people. Peter: You got it running the 70s, 80s and 90s, yep. John: Thats so true. We're not only going to be public, we're going to privately help kind of move the cause and funding. Thanks for listening. Because I talked with the Lakers guys, I talked with the Boston guys on what they had, did. In many ways, you were doing a startup when you came to Milwaukee with your partners. Then you talk about what your leadership is and what your purse is so it all starts and ends with Giannis. Let them know they're part of the family. Peter: it worked in such a great way for me and with a magic wand really evolved into one of the most incredible jobs ever. It's a simple filter to go through things, if we have to question it, we're pretty sure its wrong," shared Feigin. What a great thing. and other sports leagues begin to outline their plans for comebacks in the age of social distancing, weekend warriors like Feigin are coping with basketball-shaped voids in their lives. And that's what we try to do. The ring features plenty of subtle and not so subtle Bucks symbolism. Feigin would not be able to make his global pitch without his star. NBA all-star, olympic gold medalist & world-class investor. As you get older, its just harder to keep up with everybody., Christopher dAmboise, a former principal dancer, Adam Keefe, a former N.B.A. Peter: We took the lumps and then, yeah, I had my dream job when I was in my mid-20s as in Madison Square Garden like running marketing for the New York Knicks and I thought I could have died and gone to heaven and thats, I lived breathed in the Knicks basketball and Ranger hockey, it was the greatest. Michael Red: In this episode, we talk about Peter's incredible career accomplishments at major brands. So it was kind of building rapport and trust was the only way to kind of get this done. There's got to be solutions. Peter: Well, my dad was at Brooklynite so we were Mets and Jets. Peter Feigin: Michael, like I said, anytime, anywhere. How do you create a hermetically sealed bubble for people to compete in on a campus and all the thousands of touch points, people, logistics and everything? Team president Peter Feigin and his wife each contributed $2,900, while Feigin's brother Daniel contributed $600. I literally said, "Hey, Giannis, do me a favor. Now youre on the journey. I can't even imagine what these guys are going through.". Michael Red: I don't think there's anybody better. Youre physically building an arena, a district, a template for success. This is all a good launch point for Feigin to introduce a state-of-the-art arena. Peter is a serious businessman and a hilarious friend. Hes the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and hes a native New Yorker. I mean, nobody understands like players have a handful of days off the entire season. He's the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and he's a native New Yorker. Daniel connected the partners with Peter, then chief marketing and revenue officer of Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, to analyze the franchise from a sales and development angle. So, these guys are thrown into a world where they're responsible for everything, they assume they know everything, and what their experience is. Jesse the Jet, no question. But while it is nice to connect, Kearns described the calls as artificial sweetener. It is not the same. Post-acquisition were in an interesting time in life where my dad had been ill for a while and there was no way I was going to move to Milwaukee or take, even have the prospect of taking a job because I wanted to stay in New York and be with my father. Through Jan. 15, his PER of 29.82 was second in the league behind James Harden and just ahead of LeBron James and Stephen Curry. How do you end up managing the importance of numbers and capital. So, I'm, as you know, extremely excitable and just want to kind of attack it and love the challenge. Michael Red: So, I did some research and so, the sources got back to me. I wander around the house, Feigin said in a recent telephone interview. Very little sympathy or empathy for pro athletes because of what they get paid. A lot of storytelling and symbolic, and its been 50 years between championships. Peter Feigin: This is where I want to be. His rise from recruiter's president, handing out parking tickets in the Buck's lot, working for social justice in the epicenter of the global movement, and his unique leadership style. Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin received the Crystal Living Legend award from founders of the Black Inventors Gallery at a meet-and-greet with business leaders Wednesday. Then it would move the franchise to Las Vegas or Seattle. Peter: John, the best. So, if you're against equality, then we probably never will understand or get along or agree with each other." Peter Feigin: It was, I don't know a better way to say it other than, grassroots. She couldn't be more supporting from everything. I wanted to be in marketing in sales. But, you want to be in a place where people care about you? John: Hey, Peter. Youve collected all this human capital, both starting and back up. You start and now talk about the major, like you said, you got a great human capital person, you got a great CFO. Peter, talk a little bit about the future. Today I'm talking with Peter Feigin, President of the MBA's Milwaukee Bucks and formerly Vice-President of Marketing for the New York Knicks, and Director of Marketing at Six Flags. It's like it really is part of your life. It was, like you couldn't even, if you had a thousand scenarios, of what the last year could be for the Milwaukee Bucks and what you're kind of thinking about and dealing with, it's just been a pretty incredible ride and ton of emotion. The first game goes to 9 points, and every game after that goes to 7. If you have a partner in life, they'd better be a teammate. My favorite part of coming to Milwaukee is going into your stash of gear and getting the hoodies and the gear.
